4x4 NEUTRAL Light Coming On

Folks, I have been noticing lately that the Neutral Light (Red) on the 4x4 selector switch comes on intermittently when I start the engine. To get rid of it, I have to press on the HI Button. Sometimes the RED light will go off. Sometime it will not. When I start driving with the Red Light still ON, I press the HIGH button, it will blink for several seconds, then the HI amber light will go ON, the Red light comes OFF. In the manual, the NEUTRAL Light Red) should only come ON when depressing the HI and HI Low Lock at the SAME TIME which will then put the truck in NEUTRAL (to be used when being towed).

Any idea what is going on here? It drives fine. Just wondering why the NEUTRA light (Red) goes on sometimes.

Could be a bad switch. Are you able to go to 4hi lock and 4lo lock? Had it happen Sunday. Mine just flashes. And throws service 4wd. Mine problem is the encoder motor. Turn it off and it works, that worked for awhile

Mine does the same thing but it has never failed not to drive. I replaced the battery and it has seem to fix the problem.

It still goes to 4Hi Lock and 4Low Lock. It doesn't happen all the time. Mostly when I stopped, then change the gear to Park, the Neutral Light goes ON. When I start to drive, I press the 4HI, Red light starts to blink, then stays on 4HI. Weird.

How old is your battery?
Yes mine did the same thing and I thought it was when I went into a mud pit it got water into the connectors or the motor and like yours it always kept working. Sometimes if the N light doesn't switch to 4H I cycle the key switch on and off and then the light would switch. Mine is an 05 and the problem started in 2011 so it was time for a new battery. Just a few months ago I pulled the H2 from storage and the battery was bad so I jumped it to get it running and the same problem came back but I put a new battery on it and the problem went away again.

Mine does the same thing, I think it's the encoder motor as well. No problems shifting or driving. It did this before and after I replaced my battery awhile ago

Usually the encoder motor throws a code when switching between 4hi-4hilock-4low. The light will flash then go out. Mine been doing it for awhile. At Azusa Canyon, I think it finally gave out. Got a spare

My problem is this; 3 outta 4 times when I start the deuce the neutral light is on, I'll press 4hi button and the light usually switches to 4hi, sometimes it takes 2-3 presses of 4 hi to get the lights to switch. It shifts from 4hi to low no problem but I would like to get it fixed before I hit any serious trails. I'm pretty sure it threw up a code once and Zach said it was an encoder, there's a thread somewhere here I'll try and find...

If it is the encoder motor, is this something that need to be replaced soon? Batterry is about 2 years old. Do I need to replace battery now? I don't take my H2 off-roading (I know Zach, I'm a mall crawler. What can I say?). No error codes showing. Should I have that encoder motor replaced?

If your battery is 2 years old it should still be good. I don't drive my H2 much so I can't say what the occurrence rate is. I drove it for 2 months while I was in Texas this summer and it might have happened once. I think I am going to grab a encoder motor just to have it as a backup.
