Figured it was time to start a build thread on this one. Keeps me organized and motivated!

Over the past 10yrs, I've built several VERY different vehicles, and have pretty much used all of them for the same type of overland travel. Recently went through the long/difficult process of finding another rig to build, and had noticed how much my needs/wants in a vehicle had evolved and been refined over the years.

Some of the vehicles I've built, and reasons why I got rid of them:

2003 S10 Ext Cab ZR2 - Liked the truck, but not enough interior room. Was pretty underpowered.

1991 Landcruiser FJ80 - Not enough power, was disappointed that it wasn't the 93+ model

1995 Suburban K2500 with Cummins 12v - Had factory 454ci engine that guzzled fuel with little power to show, swapped it out for a 12v cummins diesel. Loved that rig. Had gobs of power when at high altitude, but was just a little too big really. Had tons of space/seats that I would never use.

1996 K3500 Crew Cab Dually - Had dreams of the truck camper life, but realized that wasn't for me

2002 Tacoma Double Cab TRD - Loved that rig, but the power just wasn't there...

2003 E350 7.3 Diesel 4x4 - Awesome van, was the extended length model, so TONS of room inside to live out of. Lots of power. Was a passenger model van, so I would have had to send it off to Sportsmobile for a complete interior re-model... My A.D.D didn't allow for that kind of a project.

1997 E350 7.3 Ambulance - Had everything to convert it over to a U-Joint Offroad 4x4, but again, just a massive project seeing how the entire inside would need remodeled/rewired...

1993 FZJ80 Landcruiser - Kept this one the longest out of all my rigs! Very nice rig, had factory e-lockers, solid axles, and was pretty much bulletproof. Was lifted, armored, and loaded down with about every piece of gear I could put on it. Lots of pics on the internet of this one floating around.
Reason for selling was that it just didn't have enough power... Engine was too stressed at higher elevations and during the summertime when running the A/C.

2001 Land Rover D2 - Had small lift and 285 tires, was the perfect size rig for me. Loved the V8. Just wish it wasn't riddled with all of the typical LR issues... Constant battles with ABS/traction control system, electrical issues, and it really needed a complete new interior to make it nice inside (previous owner didn't take good care of interior).

1998 Ram 2500 12v - Loved this one too... Had a hopped up 12v diesel, built 5spd manual, long arm suspension with low lift (3" over stock) and 41" tires. Rode and drove GREAT. Just wish it had a little more interior room!

Looking back at previous builds, I was able to compile my list of requirements for my next vehicle:

- Plenty of power (V8 was pretty much a must, not concerned with fuel mileage)
- Decent amount of interior space
- Not TOO big overall (like the van and ambulance)
- Reliable
- Decent offroader (Used to run pretty difficult trails in the 80 series cruiser)
- Wanted something pretty modern (I like plush interiors)
- Able to run decent size tires without much lift

Basically, for the past 3 months, I was looking at the following vehicles:

- 100 Series Landcruisers
- V8 4runners
- Grand Cherokees

Just not a lot out there that fit my particular needs. Seems like most mid-size rigs are only available with a V6 at best, and I knew that just wasn't going to cut it.
Finally during my searches, I stumbled upon a rig that I had never even known existed, but I immediately knew that it was a great choice for me. It was several states away, and after researching a BUNCH, I realized that it was pretty rare (only 500 or so made). Made arrangements with the seller, and 2 days after finding out this vehicle existed, I was on my way to pick it up.

2009 Hummer H3 Championship Edition
5.3L V8
33" Tires
4.10 Gears
4:1 Transfer Case
Front & Rear E-Lockers
LOTS of beefy underbody protection
Plush Interior with lots of luxury features (interior is really very nice)

Overall, I think this one is a winner for me! I love the size of the rig, the way it drives, the way it rides, the interior... And I especially love the big V8 power. I don't think there is any other factory-made vehicle out there that can compete with it honestly. Fits 35s with no lift, can tackle any trail that I will ever need/want to go on, and drives on the highway at 75mph like a car. Interior is literally as quiet as my 335i BMW. In fact, since purchasing this thing, I've put less than 10 miles on the BMW. :whaa:

First mod was a Daystar Dash Organizer. I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

Then came an Android powered Double-Din Headunit. Which is AWESOME by the way...

After that, some Bilstein 5100s went on. Was seriously disappointed that I couldn't get 5160s due to backorder, but I will get them as soon as they are available!
Also pictured is a slight torsion bar crank (+0.75"). She sits a little better now:

Then it was time for an alignment and some new tires. Researched just about every tire known to man, and finally decided on the BFG KO2s in 315/75/16. So far, I love the tires. Nice and quiet on the road, but I've yet to really push them out in the dirt. I imagine they will do well though.
Looks much better now as well...

At this point, I'm going over the rig and inspecting for any small issues and just generally maintaining the vehicle. Not hard on this rig, as it appears to be very well taken care of. I can tell that the radiator is pretty new, as are the engine belts and tensioner. It is missing the plastic engine cover, so I'll probably have my buddy (GM Parts Guru) get one of those on the way.

The other thing that stuck out, was that it was missing one of these:

You can tell where one USED to be!

So, less than $20 later, I now have another.

Now she's complete and happy again (OK so it's probably just me that's happy.)

Thanks! My goal for this one is to get it ready and head back out west as soon as possible.

I've got a LOT of parts being delivered this week, so a busy weekend is in store...

What mods are you planning on doing to the h3??

Really trying to nail down a rear cargo storage solution so that I can begin fabricating that. I've got a couple designs that I'm playing with right now.

Also working on getting comms setup. Have a Yaesu FT-8900r on the way (VHF/UHF/HF), as well as a matching antenna for it.

Then there are the typical bolt on parts - Safari Snorkel on the way, some rare GM accessories, lighting...ect.

And speaking of lighting, I have a full bi-xenon projector retrofit solution on the way. Should be here by weekend! I'll pop these factory headlights open, cut the backs out, and install the projectors and shrouds. Planning to swing by a paint store this week and get some OEM Silver to paint the headlight shrouds with. Should look pretty good, but will perform better. The stock headlights on these rigs leave a lot to be desired... LOL

Got a text from my buddy today saying that my parts showed up at the dealership (a few days early too). Picked them up on my way home, and got them installed before dark!

Here's what I got:

The texture matches the Championship flares PERFECTLY...

Installation was easy. Just remove a few screws with a T27 torx bit, and install the mud guards. Being an OEM part, the fitment was spot on. I've still got to get a few plastic clips (mud guards didn't come with any, and there are a couple spots where you drill a hole in existing flare and use a clip to help secure the guards). I'll finish that up this weekend, but they're on there.

Also got some DIY lightbar brackets in the mail today. Bought them from a member on here who sells them.

I'll get them formed up this weekend, and then I'll TIG them together. Haven't decided if I'll use them though.... The thought of building my own roof rack with round offroad lights has been crossing my mind lately. But if I do go with a lightbar, I'll definitely use these, as they keep the lightbar flush with the top of the roof line.

Found this on craigslist for $100. Had the guy meet me, and then put the 87 octane tune on the h3.

Made a really nice difference. Haven't played around with it yet, but it looks like I can adjust for tire size and stuff with it.

Parts from The Retrofit Store delivered today. Seriously impressed so far. These projectors are razor sharp, and have a nice band of color along the cutoff line.
*Almost* went with the Starr HID headlights just to save a ton of time, but people on HID Planet said that these would blow those headlights away. Hoping that's the case, as this will be quite the project....
The shrouds look great, and will be a perfect fit inside the H3 headlights. My plan is to black out the original headlight chrome, and then paint these shrouds the same color as the body and grille (ultra silver). I think that will look good.

Went with the following from TRS:

Stage 3 Mini D2s 3.0 projectors
50w ballasts
5500k bulbs
Apollo 3.0 shrouds
H13 Bi-xenon harness
Ultra headlight sealant

Few pics so far:

Should look great! I would have gone with TRS but they're so expensive! If you have any questions on the retrofit, I did a how to thread or you're more than welcome to pm me on here.

Awesome, thanks!

My only concern is opening up these headlights... Lol
I'm thinking that GM uses permaseal on their lights, so the typical toss them in the oven for a bit, won't be very effective.

Did you cut your lights open when you did yours?

I've tried both ways, and using a Dremel and cutting them open is ALOT easier.

Yeah I figured I would just go straight to cutting. Thought about buying aftermarket headlights to mod, but I read in a few places that a lot have started using permaseal on aftermarket units... So that would do me no good. Lol

On another note, these things are ridiculous. They blow my 2012 BMW 335i headlights away, and also my wife's 2015 acura.
Pics do them no justice honestly.

Yep, that one was on Pirate. I used a buddy's shop to turn that truck into a 6x6, and then he decided that he wanted it more than I did, so he bought it from me.

I don't plan on going crazy with this one, as I want to be able to hop in it and cruise out to Moab in comfort. More of a family rig.

Got to put a few dirt miles on the hummer today.
Ran this road right after installing the 35s, and the rear door handles were covered with dirt/mud. That's what prompted me to get the mud guards. They work great for their intended purpose.

I'll do a proper write up soon, but I think this is turning out pretty good.

I was able to bake the headlight for a 15min @ 225 and it came right apart. Definitely not permaseal on these. Soft and pliable sealer, reminds me of black rtv almost.

Still need to do some trimming so that the projector will recess far enough for the headlight lens to go back on. Then a bunch of paint and cleanup work... Lol
