H3 Roof Racks

Here are some pics of my Knight Metal Works H3 expedition rack. It was custom made by Scarsman. It has multiple tie down points in the cargo area, a hi-lift jack mount, two removable ammo boxes, and room for 4 6x9 KC lights up front.

Hands down the best one I would put my cash into!!!! I need to make it big to I can have the first for a T!!!

M22KLARS is the winner! The Boulder Accessories is hands down the best rack for the buck. I looked long and hard at all the available racks, and the BA is the only choice. Its aluminum...a huge plus. One person can bolt it on/off in minutes. It comes apart and can be put in a small box (cheap shipping). Best of all...it fits the H3 well and doesn't look like it is adapted from some other vehicle.

Don't over-buy and think you need a super heavy-duty steel rack. Some companies (...shall remain nameless :roll advertise some pretty high cargo specs...apparently to justify a truly insane retail price. I'm all about the Heavy Duty...but what most folks don't realize, is that the gutters of the H3 will break off long before this rack's cargo limit is reached. So while a heavy-duty, mega-dollar rack is nice...it means nothing if you can only put 150lbs on it. BTW...that's all I would ever put on ANY roof rack.

If you can't find a BA rack...have one custom made from aluminum. The last thing an H3 needs is more curb weight...especially up high. That's just my HO.

I have to agree on the BA rack as well. I really wanted one for my truck but a good deal on the Defender came up instead. Maybe one day I will find one on flea-bay

I'm in the group for lighter rack, easily removable by one person for reconfiguration of possibility's but still have a reasonable capacity.
I don't really need it all the time to haul a hi-lift or the cool factor.

I can agree with you guys...I would say its my one regret about my truck. I planned on doing ligher off roading where COG didnt matter as much but that has changed. I keep telling myself that one of these days I will make an aluminum rack. I just need some extra welding supplies for aluminum.

The warrior rack I went with was just under 70 pounds. When I go to the race track or camping I like to take lawn chairs and a pop up awning. That's the main stuff going on my rack. Plus I used a 20% off coupon thru jcwhitney. So I have less then $450 in the rack.

On looks alone, I find the Knight Metalworks rack to be pretty kick-ass. I like the tie-downs and really like the ammo boxes as well.

What model of KCs did you get? I have some cheap PepBoys specials that on my Defender that I want to upgrade.

I have the defender rack too--- it's pretty light and has saved my butt several times. I had a high lift on it for a little while but the high lift seems to be pretty loud when you go over bumps. I have a CB antenna mounted on it too, which I swivel down parallel to the roof when I'm not off-road (after breaking my first antenna in a parking lot...). My first Moab trip-- my wife called me from California to pick her and our kids up, I was loaded with gear and a dog and we were able to stack the rack high and pile the dog in the back. I think the Defender rack was only $350 or so, pretty cheap.

Hahahahaha ur so close!!! My salary wont pay for a gobi lol.. I went to a salvage yard and got one off a nissan xterra.... Cut it to size and made it wider to fit the body.. It holds just as much weight as any standard rack u can buy.. Lol you will see it all in my build thread!!!

Thinking of getting a locally made rack made out of 3/4 inch schedule 40 steel pipe (bent, cut and welded), steel mesh bottom, is full leanth (no sun roof), is the stealth design, kevlar coating and weighs 70lb. Cost is $550. Material is my question. What is the best material to use? Will schedule 40 work? Will it hold up?

What lights are you using on your boulder racks? I've wanted lights for a while but wasn't sure how helpful they would be since the rack sits so far back. Do you lose a lot of light off the roof or did you pick a certain beam pattern?
