I have a friend who is diesel tech at fors with a high end scanner. Even before chevy could not figure out my tpms problem when it would activate at with all tires at 40psi. I know off several people with toyotas that were able to get away using this method. Tryin to figure how to detect which sensor is bad. Ill keep you guys updated.

Do you have experience with this tool?

Yes, its what we use at work. There are better videos on Youtube that show and explain how to use it to find defective sensors.

*edit,
If you can put up with all the talking, this one explains more in depth on how it is used to find defective sensors

Cool. Thanks. Just wanted to make sure it was truly compatible with the H3. Many manufacturers state they are, and you find out they aren't.

Well to answer that question more specifically, it has been used on my H3 at least 3 times and well over 30 times on Colorado/Canyons (use the same sensor as the H3). I am getting ready to rotate my spare in and will have to relearn them, I can take a video if you want.

Cool. I think this would be a great video for most owners. When you do, post it on a new thread so it's easier to find. Thanks for the great advice.

Anyone know how to "synch" new sensors to the vehicle? I remember reading about it in the old forum. I sold my old rims with the sensors since they didn't fit on the new rims.

This is from my 06 owners manual. Hope it helps.

You will have one minute to match the first tire/wheelposition, and five minutes overall to match all fourtire/wheel positions. If it takes longer than one minute,to match the first tire and wheel, or more than fiveminutes to match all four tire and wheel positions the
matching process stops and you will need to start over.

The TPM sensor matching procedure is outlined below:
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON with the engine off.
3. Turn the exterior lamp switch from AUTO toON four times within three seconds. A double hornchirp will sound and the TPMS low tire warninglight will begin to flash. The double horn chirp andflashing TPMS warning light indicates the TPMmatching process has started. The TPMS warninglight should continue flashing throughout thematching procedure. The SERV TPM message willbe displayed on the Driver Information Center (DIC).
4. Start with the left (driver’s side) front tire.
5. Remove the valve cap from the valve cap stem.Activate the TPMS sensor by increasing ordecreasing the tire’s air pressure for 10 seconds, then stop and listen for a single horn chirp. The single horn chirp should sound within15 seconds, confirming that the sensor identificationcode has been matched to this tire and wheelposition. If you do not hear the confirming singlehorn chirp, you will need to start over with stepnumber one. To let air-pressure out of a tire you canuse the pointy end of the valve cap, a pencil-styleair pressure gage or a key.
6. Proceed to the right (passenger’s side) front tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 5.
7. Proceed to the right (passenger’s side) rear tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 5.
8. Proceed to the left (driver’s side) rear tire, andrepeat the procedure in Step 5.
9. After hearing the confirming horn chirp for the leftrear tire, check to see if the TPMS warning light isstill flashing. If yes, turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
10. Set all four tires to the recommended air pressurelevel as indicated on the Tire and LoadingInformation label.

11. Put the valve caps back on the valve stems.

Since the TPMS kit is free with the tires why not get it and put them in the tires? When you air down you just have to press the button on the odometer once and the low tire warning goes away. Or you could mount all of them in the spare.

The tpms relearn instructions in the owner's manual are not 100% accurate. Here are the ones instructions I had saved a while back and found out that they were more accurate than what was in the manual.

a) Check tire pressure on all tires to make sure you are at over 38 psi in all tires.
b) Set parking brake
c) Turn on Key, then quickly turn headlamps on and off 4 times
d) 2 horn beeps sound to signal you are now entering the 5 minute calibration mode. The User Manual is wrong since the TPM ICON does NOT FLASH as documented.
e) Go to left front tire and inflate or deflate for least 10 seconds
f) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
g) Go to right front tire and inflate or deflate for at least 10 seconds
h) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
i) Go to right rear tire and inflate or deflate for at least 10 seconds
j) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
k) Go to left rear tire and inflate or deflate for at least 10 seconds
l) Wait for beep to signal ready to move on
m) Turn the key to off to lock position - most people would conclude the reset should be done at this point.

Notes:

When you now turn your key back on and the DIC TPMS message is still there after all your hard work, the trick is you have to actually drive the vehicle before the TPM reset is finalized. The manual should at least note this requirement.

You don't have to touch the spare other that make sure pressure is up before you start.

If you take more than 5 minutes, you have to start over with the ignition off. If after all this, and the DIC message is still there, you might have a dead battery in one of your sensors.

You can also buy the OTC tpms tool - not cheap though - but if you switch rims and tires out every spring and fall for winter or for wheeling/road wheels yourself, it may well be worth the investment & will saves you a ton of time resetting the sensors using the above procedures and dealing with raising and lowering the air pressure or dealing with the dealership or a tire shop to do it for you.

Portager,

I take it you haven't had any issues with your Hutchinson TPMS kits?

Portager,

That would be correct. Tustin Hummer installed them and didn't say they had any issues installing the TPMS kits. They had some issues with the wheels at first, so I sent them Hutchinson installation instructions. They said the instructions were a big help, but they didn’t have any issues with the TPMS kits. Mine TPMS have worked the same as before I switched to the Hutchinson's so I have no complaints.

Well 90% sure at this point I have a bad sensor. Once again light came on this morning and then after 5 min turned off. I need that scan gauge that solarflare posted. Havent had a chance to take it my friends shop and check. LIke I said earlier Ive had it at chevy for the same problem and they couldnt figure it out or didnt want to. It is nice driving with the 315's with 30psi alot smoother.

After having read this great solution to an annoying problem, I came up with my own variation. The setup the OP did works if you are using the original sensors you had on the vehicle. If you are using new sensors, like in my case, you can't put all the sensors in one container. You have to put them in 4 different containers. This is for when you program them, since they have to be done individually one at a time. Since this is what I had to do this, I was going to have to be stuck with 4 pipe bomb looking things in my truck. Besides being bulky, it's not something I want some suspicious LEO finding in my truck. So I decided to do a combo of the OPs setup and mine. After programming the sensor individually to my truck, I plan to put all the sensors in one container. How was I going to accomplish this without destroying the containers? By making them so you can open them.

This looks pretty much like the OPs setup. A container with a valve.

This is where the difference starts. I will do a full write up because I had a lot of leak issues, and after experimenting, I finally got a solution that so far has held air for over 24 hours.

looks to me like youre making some suspicious devices in your vehicle recon. Im going to have to confiscate your vehicle, you can keep your suspicious devices though.

Onlyproblem I could see that MIGHT happen is that the BCM may set a code implyingthere is a problem with a sensor(s). But not sure if a code will be set. Iguess time will tell.
GMuses quite a few different sensors and programs in the BCM for TP sensors. I doknow that the sensors will go into a stationary state if there is no movementdetermined by the built in accelerometer inside the sensor. In this state(which is normally parked for a specific time, but in this case will be in atube) the sensor basically goes to sleep.
Here’swhere the confusion comes due to different systems.
Inone system, the sensors will wake up when the accelerometer senses rolling andstart to send a signal every 60 seconds to the BCM. (That is why if you have alow tire, it might take about a half mile for the system to notify you of thelow tire.) If this is the system programmed into the BCM of the H3, the BCMwill note that the wheels are turning (ABS wheel speed sensor input) but notsee a signal from the TP sensor and start to get curious about the loss of thesignal and will come to the conclusion that the system has failed and turn onthe Service the TPM system (not the low tire warning).
This condition could set off a C0245 (wheel speedsensor freq error) or some other failure code for the TPMS.
Theother system used has sensors that only send a signal if there is a drop orincrease of air pressure in the tire. (Usually set to around 1.2 psi drop orincrease.) With this system, the BCM may stay ignorant to the sensor not moving(rolling) since it is only expecting a signal if there is a decrease/increasein tire pressure. And I don’t believe the BCM is programmed to ‘think’ therewill be an increase or decrease in pressure. It just stays dumb and happy.

Iguess if people do this and start to get a system problems it is scenario 1.

Butthis idea is not new and for some reason I believe some tried it way back in 06on Elcova and it failed to work properly.

Asfor 08 Solar Flare and the tire rotation with the spare. On 08s there is nosensor in the spare, unless you have added one. But the factory dropped thoseon 08 (maybe even some late 07).

On older vehicles with the sensor in the spare, you never need to worry about it if the four on the ground are the ones programmed to the BCM. The BCM will only recognzie four sensors at one time.

Yep, I think time will tell with these solutions. Interesting stuff at work. Thanks for the tips, Doug, as these may help troubleshoot errors down the road.

Doug. I always thought that it was necessary for the sensor to be rotating to be able to work. Just like you mentioned. I figured it would never work, but according to the OP, he's had it in his glove box for a couple of days and it seems to be working. That makes me think that the sensor are the pressure sensitive ones you mentioned. We'll see what happens when I give it a try.

Wife had a new baby so i havent really been checking the site often. Anyways i was talking to a friend with a 09 tacoma that was having the same issue i was having with it being fine for awhile then would kick on/off/on. I will get more specifics later today but i beliwve he was saying to fool the light that one of the signal wires from the tpms computer you tap the wire near the dash with a constant 3-5 volt and supposedly gives the same signal as the rotational signal. Thats what he did supposedly on his I will call him later on today.

Congrats on the baby! Interesting solution. Let us know what he says. I was thinking of tying down the pipe to the frame. The idea is to see if vibration of motor and driving is enough to set off the motion sensors. Eventually we'll find a solution that works 100%. :)

Okay little update, been working on a 4 link on my buddies jeep and had to get the 40" mtr's installed, while there i had them test all my tpms sensors and all are working . Im trying to track down which wire needs the 5 amp to fool the dash light. Just have alot of projects goin on arb should be here today, need to start my new work bench, rzr roll cage, blah blah blah lol

I highly suggest you DO NOT do to the H3 what someone is doing to a Jeep, Toyota, or any other vehicle. The TPMS on the H3 is BCM controlled and signals to the cluster are from the BCM via the data link. Applying any type of voltage could destroy more than the TPM light.

Also, curious didn't the sensors in the tube work or did you light come on after a few miles (maybe more than just a few)?
