Hello all, wanted to say hi and thanks for having me. I am a new H3 owner and have very big plans for my build, I've owned and built several different makes and models of off road vehicles over the years, the last dozen or more on Jeeps specifically my last being a 1977 CJ7 which was great until my son started to outgrow the back seat and I realized I got older along with him. I decided after a recent two week trip to Sand Hollow Utah that I was ready for a bit more comfortable off road rig and after weighing several factors decided on an H3. I have plans for a SAS swap with hydro assist, 3 link front, 4 link triangulated rear and some body armor improvements as well. I have done this a few times before my CJ7 being the last project I was working on, I never say finished be ouse they never truly are, if you know then you know. I'm located in North Idaho, I've shown down a bit in the last several years due to multiple cancer diagnoses and subsequent treatments and surgeries but my family and the build is what keeps me going. I actually stumbled on this forum looking for information on the best steering box to use for an SAS swap with hydro assist and maybe a bit of forward movement of the front axle so any information would be amazing. Thank you again.

Welcome,

Excited to see the build! Quite a few of us have done SAS on the H3. my personal one has been done twice, once via THORparts using a gm dana 44 and the stock rear end, and a second time by me, using a gm dana 60 and 14b.

As far as steering going, ive seen a few different boxes used. I am using a toyota fj80 steering box THORparts made this decision when it was first being build, laregly due to the forward facing pitman arm. This let him and I slide the front axle forward, right now a total of 2.5". This box also sits outside the frame, better clearance with the motor, longer drag link, etc. Mine came ported for hydro assist from the previous owner of the box, i had it rebuild by redhead steering at one point. FJ80 box also doesn't have a master/indexing spline on the sector shaft, so you can really fine tune the alignment if you want.

You can use a rear facing pitman arm box, its just more packaging and harder to slide the axle forward and get all the clearances you want. squeakyh3 made it work very well.

Some of the ones used:
FJ80 - outside the frame, forward facing pitman arm, no master spline on sector shaft
Nissan xterra - outside the frame, rear facing pitman arm, does have a master spline on sector shaft
Toyota IFS - this is a newer box that thorparts has used - forward facing pitman, cheaper to source
Reconh3 - not sure what he used, a jk or PSC box of some kind

IMO if you're trying to get wild with it, which sounds like you are , choose one that does a forward facing pitman arm, this will let you push the front axle forward to clear 40s, 42s, or whatever you want, with less trimming.
