Very interesting! Those links drive home the point that we really don't have it too bad here in the US but we take way too much for granted!

Glad he said to stockpile liquor and ammo. I'm good with that.

Not making light of all that. It's crazy what people have to endure.

Very interesting read. Not too different than what you would expect. Just remember the LA riots and then extend that out for a year.

Wow- Very interesting read indeed. Thanks Desert for posting that. I'm afraid that our country could possibly be headed in that direction unless we can turn things around. True that we don't have it that bad... yet. But we seem to be getting there. The signs are all around us!!

Our media has a definite political bias, and isn't reporting a lot of what is going on overseas and misreporting what is going on here because we have an election year coming up. The situation is far worse than they are telling us. Having extra essentials stored is wisdom even in good times, and even more important now. We could be in for a very bumpy ride.

Paladine is right. If you think the real story is reported to us about what is going on here or overseas you are pretty naive. The article pretty much hit it on the head. Weapons and ammo, food, medical supplies and fuel. Plenty of each is essential. Being in earthquake country a lot of us have a head start in that we keep earthquake bins with food, batteries, candles, matches, etc already. Being a guy that likes to hunt, camp and fish I am well stocked on equipment. Can't keep enough but I always have 4-5 cases of water on hand. While I do keep a relatively sizeable stash of Scotch the posters observations on alcohol were a bit surprising to me. The 94 H1 also has a third tank so I keep it fueled with 87 gallons of diesel. Like the author says, you hope it never comes to what he went through but sometimes it does. Better to be prepared for something that never happens that caught by surprise by something that does occur.

Alcohol was and is used as currency in many parts of the world, as are other creature comforts like cigarettes, medicine and even chocolate. Even if things stabilize politically (which I don't see happening), there are more frequent storms, earthquakes and other catastropes happening every year. That doesn't even take into account the aging electrical grid that is already overtaxed now. Remember the massive power outages in New York and other areas in the past few years? It's better to be safe than sorry, my family is worth the extra time and expense. We are thinking about all of the "little" things that we need power for and are finding alternatives, just in case. Things like.... cooking, bathing, laundry, toilets, food preservation, water purification, lighting, heat, etc. Like Rugged said a while back, our motto is "one is none, and two is one."

Perhaps the most important preparation that we are making is "community." A gathering of like-minded people to help each other if times get really hard. None of us can do this alone. We are already building some of those connections here on H4O.

Have to agree our media sucks. I don't remember even hearing about the economic colapse in Argentina.
Even though the results were very close to being the same I can see an economic colapse happening here before a civil war.

I did find it interesting one says buy gold and the other says it was worthless. Bullets, toilet paper and alchohol are better. Have to get some zippo lighters and candles too.

We out here are trying to learn with what happens, and what we might expect. Power outages, and with 2 birds it can be hard to keep the house warm without power so we got a Propane Fireplace, and are looking at Generators right now. We should have a thread about essentials needed on the trail, and in the home:thumbs:

I think that I'll start a new thread on Emergency Preparedness, maybe tomorrow. I'd like to exchange some ideas on gear, plans, etc. I've had a lot of exposure to this in the Army and as a Red Cross volunteer. Hell, my Masters Degree is in Emergency Management. More to follow...

I seem to remember the City of LA telling citizens to prepare to be "on your own" for up to 4-5 days after an major disaster event before some basic level of services/security can be restored [or rather the length of time it takes the national guard to deploy]. Its good advice to be self sufficient anyways, even the local police and fire fighters state their top priority would be schools, hospitals and chemical plants and such and not residential areas.

Honestly I'm amused by that number, since a major quake would leave LA in a big mess for weeks. That windstorm a few months back had power knocked out in some area for weeks which is pretty pathetic disaster response... :giggle:

Best to be protected, have a few weeks of basic supplies, weapons, tools, first aid kits and as the articles above point out, keep a low profile and don't advertise that you got valuables [food, clean water, etc].

Anything like the Japan Tsunami would have a large portion of West LA flooded out and a big mess of people trying to escape the city..

I've given this a little thought and have determined that there are numerous directions that this type of thread can go.

We could talk about Self Reliance (developing systems that make you and your family less reliant on the electrical grid, super markets, etc.)

We could talk about Training (everything from an off-grid career as a fall-back, to primitive knowledge like making fire from sticks, field dressing animals, hunting, fishing, etc.)

We could talk about Gear (what to carry, what to stock, camping items, what to carry in your rig).

We could talk about SHTF plans (where to fall back to, how to fortify your house, etc.)

Which ones are you guys interested in? Each could become it's own thread.

Let's decide ahead to keep religion, politics, and other divisive areas out of the discussion. Additionally, it's important to note that each person and situation is different. What works fine for me might not work for you, so all ideas are suggestions, and not things to fight over. If you don't like my knife, so be it, no need to argue that yours is better, recommend it and be prepared to discuss good and bad points. The intent is to share ideas, no one person knows it all and techniques differ. If you think that people that prepare are crazy (as the media is attempting to portray the Doomsday Preppers folks on T.V.), so be it, you don't have to contribute but we ask that you keep your criticism to yourself, unless you have experience that you are willing to offer to the group. Sound okay?

Good layout on the thread James. I think we get around to talking about all the topics. Maybe even have people explain their situations and get group input. I am not an expert by any means but have put a lot of thought into this topic and made quite a few preparations. Only big issue, besides the am I adequately prepared question, is which disaster do you prepare for? While most share many preparations their are differences. My most likely scenario in CA is an earthquake or social unrest, aka Rodney King. In Texas my issues would be somewhat different.

I agree. That being said, and knowing how broad this subject can be, I'd like to propose an entire section be opened for the many topics of this subject. We could do threads for every separate topic instead of just one for everything.

Possible threads include:
emergency types per region
bugout bags
food storage
water purification and storage
weapons
precious metals
tools
self reliance around the home
evacuation routes
primitive skills
recommended reading
etc. etc. etc.

This is an area I'm pretty heavy into (and if anyone says they'll end up on my doorstep, I'll slap you ). For an offroad site, I don't know that you need an entire section with subsections. A subsection under general would definitely be good though. The more we can convince everyone to prepare, the better off the community will be as a whole if something happens.

I've read through both blogs in the past, and was actually on SB when selco was answering questions. Definitely eye opening both from a needs perspective and human behavior. Gold is good if everything else is covered and you're worried about preserving wealth, but does nothing for survival. If you don't have basics for survival then gold is worthless. Alcohol and the like historically make good trade items, but it's better to not need to trade.

The official government line is 3-5 days. If you're not prepped with basics (food, water, shelter, light, radio, tools) for 2 weeks minimum you could be in for some pain (see: Katrina, Rodney riots, ice storms out east, etc). Offroaders have the advantage when it is time to leave including but not limited to curbs, ditches, and trails. Personally, I want my truck to support 2 week unsupported camping trips anyway. :horns:

I want to start this new section by thanking the Admins for creating a whole new section for emergency preparedness. Hopefully, this will stimulate conversation and learning.
