Tranny popped a P0894 again....

GM crate transmission. In for the 4th time for problems in less than 14000 miles. This time it threw a P0894 and wouldn't shift into 4th gear.
One of the service advisers about blew a gasket when I told him I expect a new transmission put in this time. Or at the least an extension to the 3 year warranty.

I'm a little fed up. When I had the crate tranny installed I expected the rebuild to happen BEFORE it went into the vehicle NOT after. I believe that's a reasonable expectation.

1st visit was less than a week after getting the vehicle after crate engine and tranny swap.
2nd was when the damn thing left me stranded in Moab. Thanks for the help Neo. It was greatly appreciated.
3rd popped a code P0894. Now here is where I screwed up. I erased it thinking it would come right back. It didn't. I took it in and the drop the pan, change the filter and flush. Out of pocket of course.
4th. driving on the highway and it popped the code. It's at the dealer now.

Hell, I haven't even had this tranny offroad. And the crate warranty runs out in June. Hope GM reads this and figures out I'm not very happy with them right now.

Blowing a gasket is the last thing the service adviser should have done. If he wants to do that, aim it at GM for the poor quality crate transmission. I see nothing wrong with demanding either a new transmission or having the warranty extended on the current one, although with this being the 4th problem within 14K miles, I would push hard for a new transmission. Another example of useless drama at a "stealership".

Just got call from dealer. Low fluid from leaking transmission lines. :gaah: So... My fault.
Having them replace the lines and adding a trans cooler I've had sitting in the back seat for a year.

Feeling a road trip coming on at end of next week.

Took it to the desert today. Check engine light came on and it wouldn't shift into 4th gear.
Back to the dealer Monday

Dropped it off yesterday... Tranny "Specialist" is on vacation this week. My normal service manager is on vacation next week.
Left truck there.
We're batting a thousand here ☹️

That code seems to be for torque converter slippage and shouldn't have anything to do with 4th gear.

When you say it wont shift to 4th does it not shift or does it shift and then doesn't engage or go anywhere. What exactly are your symptoms. .

Stupid question, did they put a new torque converter when they changed the transmission?

Going down the highway at 80 mph. Move shift handle from D to 3 and nothing happens. RPM stays the same about 3400.
When starting out from a dead stop you can feel the first 3 gears and it never goes above that when it's acting up.

3 years ago I had a GM crate transmission installed. I don't know if that included the tongue converter.

My old transmission never gave me any problems. But at 173k everyone told me it was end of life. So I had it changed with the engine.
That's what I get for listening to experts. Should have kept the damn thing

Ok. Got the call today. Service manager said most of the errors were communication errors. They pulled the fuse box and found corrosion.
They cleaned it up and put anti-corrosion stuff. They driver it about 40 miles without problems. They want to drive it cold to make sure. If no further problems I'll get it back tomorrow.

Finally got it back today. They said all of the errors were communication errors. So they driver it and cleaned a few connectors and the fuse panel and treated it for corrosion.
I did get a surprise. Young Chevrolet in Layton Utah didn't charge me. Said it was because they installed the transmission.
Thank you!

It's back in the shop. Ran great to work (60 miles round trip) for two weeks.
Took it out today, just shy of Tooele Utah doing 80 MPH it down shift to 3rd and stays there. Not even a check engine light.
Smelled burned fluid when we slowed down and it started shifting fine at slower speed. Like 70 MPH.
It's back at dealer. This is getting old.

Well just got my truck back this morning, Dealer CND. The drove it no codes popped up and shifted fine.
I asked them if they had driven it at high speed they said they drove it to Bountiful. About 15 Miles at 70 MPH.
I took it and drove it to Tooele exit on I-80. Top speed limit is 75MPH. I was going a little faster. Turned around at Tooele because I had to get to work and exits are a little far apart that far out.
Shifted fine at start. On I-80 she started shifting a little harder. If I manually downshifted to third you can tell it didn't want to go back to 4th. But would return after about 20-30 seconds.
Turned around at Tooele and when accelerating to on I-80 I started smelling burnt trans fluid. It was shifting a bit hard. Don't know what trans temp was. But outside temp was 97, engine temp about 3/4, AC is on. Now I've driven this vehicle at over 100 deg , AC going full and offroad. So these readings are within expected tolerances.
One side note when it downshifted last Friday. I manually moved lever to 3rd and when putting shift lever back into 4th, you can feel it try to shift. But it was acting like it shifted from 3rd gear to 3rd gear. For the most part it drove fine going to work. It does shift rougher now.
Any Ideas??? I'm at a loss.

Contacted GM customer care. I have a case number and should be contacted by a senior rep in 24 to 48 hours.

Well that was a waist of time. Doesn't matter that I've had this tranny in for problems no less than 6 times. First thing I got hit with was. Well last time it was in they couldn't find a problem and there was no codes. Time before that was communication errors that they fixed. Bla, bla bla.
She told me I could try another dealer. I told her I don't have time. I have to work for a living. And ended the call before I got too angry.
I made an appointment with a local transmission shop that has good recommendations.
If I had the money I'd have this shop install a new transmission. Then drop the old one off at Chevrolet, tell them it's still under warranty, and maybe now they can figure out what's wrong with it.
And then walk out!!!!

Hope this works out. Like we talked about, part of the reason I went with GM was the warranty. I haven't had issues so maybe I've been lucky. They better take care of you!

Parker still wants to go up in the simulator.

Lol.. Parker is always welcome anytime... The stars just didn't align last trip.
Usually GM dose well on their warranties. This time they fell short. Just sucked it happens like this.
Hopefully the local shop can fix it.

Talked to a local transmission shop. After giving him the history of this transmission. He thinks the transmission is fine and that I have an electrical problem.
Electrical problems I can deal with. First thing to check is where the negative battery wire connects to the engine. I think it's loose. Unfortunately it may also be cross threaded.
Also want to check the grounding straps.
Wish I had an air conditioned garage.

Well installed a new battery harness. I installed a new ground bolt. The new one by com code is a little shorter than the inner that was in there. Though the holes seemed plenty deep.

Also finished installing Timbren bump stops. Did the rear a couple of months ago. Rear are easy to install. But a about 8 inches of 6x6 helped.
Front were allot harder. It would be easier if i undid top ball joint. But I'm stubborn and did them without doing the ball joint.

Rear are pop in.
Pry out the old bump stop.
Jack up the frame on one side. Place one side in place with something to fill the gap between the stop and the axle. A chunk of 8x8 lumber worked well.
I just drove off the hump at the end of the driveway and backed up a couple of times. Then checked how the stop seated and adjust the liner and repeat.
Both sides only took one repeat to seat properly.

Front are bolt in and have a very thick washer. Put truck on Jack stand and put floor jack under lower ball joint.
Remove tire. Remove old bump stop.
The well above the bump stop has 3 bottom corners open for drainage.
Drop the nut into the well and move in place over bolt hole. A flashlight helps align the nut. Hold in place with a screw driver.
Take bump stop, put washer in place and put into place. Start screwing bolt into nut.
I then used a 12 inch extension and universal joint to tighten nut. Just Jack up to hold the stop in place.
It takes a little finess but it's doable without removing upper A arm.
A 3/8 extension will just for on the inside of the A-frame arm. I had to us a little Force. But it works.

The Timbren bump stop make the suspension quit a bit stiffer. But I like it and there's almost no body role when turning out of a driveway.
