Will a hose clamp fit around it? That'd hold it down fine and not rust away.
I meant around the manifold, not the bolt.
How much do we really need these heat shields? When mine goes I plan on leaving it gone

Fits up to 12" diameter pipes (or exhaust manifolds in this case). You can get hose clamps in a large range of sizes.

If it is flush with the heat shield, there may be a small amount of the stud visible once you remove the shield. Try spraying and then see if you can manage to get a good pair of vice grips on it and try removing it. I know that it is easier said than done but try. I just replaced my exhaust manifold and that bolt is a PIA.
I think my exhaust manifold is cracked or something. A friend who owns a muffler shop 25 years had it on the hoist and both of us looked and listened but didn't appear the exhaust pipes Etc were loose that was with a little "noise). Took it down the road, something "popped" and then the truck sound. I figured I would take the heat shield off so I could see if the manifold was cracked. bolt broke off etc.
I got the 3 nuts off finally but can't get the shield out. I think I could but the auto trans check tube is in the way. How do you take the tube out or is there other secrets. Thanks for a prompt reply Paranormal or anyone. Taos, New Mexico.
My exhaust manifold shield was eroded so I used sheet metal nibblers to cut it half down the center. Then nibbled-out a space around the o2 sensor and was able to remove it very easily without messing with the AC lines and surrounding things. Turns out my rattle wasn't the manifold heat shield but the catalytic converter inside the manifold.
I'm going to cut the heat shield off like delta88 did and am wondering if "wrapping" the manifold would be the same, better or worse than putting another heat shield on since I would remove the manifold, install new gasket etc., and put it back on. OR, can you even wrap a cast manifold - I know you can but is it a good idea or do just not wrap cast iron - just trying to get away from spending 3 hours trying to get another heat shield on..
The dipstick is held in place by one bolt. Remove the bolt and pull up on the dipstick, it'll come out. You can go to an auto parts place and buy yourself an O2 sensor tool for about $12. Undo the O2 sensor plug, unscrew the sensor with your new socket, remove the dipstick and after a few tries, you'll be able to take the heat shield out from the top.
It does not simply come out. That's why I said after a few tries. When I finally worked mine out, I was shocked on how easy it came out. It had to be positioned perfectly. My hands were pretty beat up but it finally came out. A/C lines were also a little snug but the shield bends a little.Forgot about the trans tube dip stick, mine was a 5 speed MANual. Even without the trans tube in the way my 09 had a bunch other things in the way to simply just pull it up and out.
